Bishops' Registers

From around 12th to the 18th century dioocesan bishop's kept a register of their actions. This included enquiries, charters, appointments, judgements and much else. The majority have survived and can be found in record offices up and down the country. Many have been transcribed, mostly by the Canterbury and York Society.

The ones of interest to Purley are those for the Dioceses of Salisbury and Canterbury. The Canterbury registers cover periods of inter-regnum in the Salisbury Diocese. Copies of most of the entries relating to Purley are held in the Project Purley Archive. Copies of the published registers obtained by John Chapman have been deposited in the library of Douai Abbey.

The list below indicates which registers have been accessed by Project Purley and, where available, where a copy is held in the Project Purley Archive. Greater detail will be found in the history of St Mary the Virgin Church
